I‘m blown away by this outright nasty cover design by Tomer Hanuka created for Philosophy in the Boudoir: Or, The Immoral Mentors (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition), penned by Marquis De Sade in 1795 in the wake of the French Revolution.
The hotly debated play, regarded by some as social philosophy shrouded in erotica and by others as straight-up Victorian-era porn, is a throbbing tale of the corruption of a 15-year-old girl named Eugénie at the hands of three wealthy perverts.
Hanuka, via his blog Tropical Toxic, lays out the process that led to these wicked illustrations and generously provides his sketches too. All for a book where, in the artist’s words,
two adults teach a young girl… why rape, pedophilia, abusing the poor, choking (for arousal), murder, adultery, incest and other progressive ideas are the only true values one should live by. and that anal is always better.
Um…. Indeed.
