666 Photography Rescuing Retro

Sick of the whole neo-retro pin-up girl thing with tattooed alterna-chicks named “Veronika Vroom” and “Dee Licious” in their black nail-polish and straight-cut “dragon-lady” bangs posing in 50’s-style bathing suits with flamed-up muscle cars and zebra-skin backdrops?

(Um. Stay calm, honey- but I think your nose ring’s caught on the fuzzy dice… again.)

Well, the genre may be cliché, but 666 Photography- an Austin, Texas based company specializing in “retro/vintage” photos- is reinventing classic pin-up girl sensationalism with a unique DIY ethic and a vivid sensuality. The stuff in their portfolio (though at times falling into tired stereotypes) is generally fresh and excellently original, with a trashy radiance that easily outshines most photography in its niche.

The “high concept” works are the best with their colorful custom-made backdrops, overflowing with kitsch props and costumes, culminating in an engaging compilation of white-trash fantasy pics that look like dream sequences from some forgotten John Waters‘ movie. Many of 666’s toothy burlesques and sassy conceptual pictures are also available for sale as prints- no word yet on whether they come wrapped in snake-skin.

From the 666 Bio:

Our approach to taking photos is that, for us, it is not enough to simply be able to take a good photo. We pride ourselves in being able to create an entire concept from beginning to end. Our props are handmade, our backdrops are handpainted, and if we can’t find the perfect costume, we make it!
