A recent article at We Make Money Not Art turned me on to a phenomena that I never knew existed: Guerilla Knitting!
Ok. So this stuff looks like somebody’s grandma exploded on the scene high on crack, in a black hoodie, and began covertly crocheting much-needed cozies for loose bricks, street signs, door handles, and any other naughty naked bits of the city. But pump your brakes if you think I’m making fun; these are some of the cutest acts of anarchy I’ve ever seen. Inspired, I decided to do a little digging of my own and came up with a few guerrilla knitters, both newbies and OG’s, whose work you should know:

This group of renegade knitters, started in April of 2007, are taking needles into their own hands and dropping bombs all over the Kansas City area. They’ve also started a blog to chronicle their adventures. According to their site,

| One of the more well-known guerilla knitting crews, Knitta has been around since 2005 and have even been featured on Saturday Night Live. Their very cool site, knittaplease.com, houses funny bios on the members of the group and an impressive gallery of photos of Knitta works all over the world, from Seattle to Paris to the Great Wall of China! |

Masquerade definitely brings her own delicious flava to her environments, dressing up statues, dangling Christmas ornaments from street signs… the usual. Check out her blog for unique tags around Stockholm and her “world tour” photos from all over Europe and the States. |
| Labeling themselves as “Chicago crochet graffiti artists,” the Micro-Fiber Militia are prettying up the streets one bike-rack at a time. A trip to their blog proves that they will not rest until every park bench, water pipe and parking meter are gussied up for the winter. |
